UC is dropping SAT Subject Test on 2012
University of California regents approved to a change in freshman admission standards that would drop SAT subject tests and make more students eligible for a review of their applications It will take effect for students applying admission for fall 2012, with current high school freshmen the first to be affected.According to UC's official newsroom, prospective students will no longer be required to take the SAT subject tests, thus aligning UC's test requirements more closely with those of other public universities. UC is currently the only public higher education system in the nation to require students to take two subject tests.
The elimination of UC's subject test requirement indicates SAT Subject Tests contribute very little to UC's ability to select freshmen who will do well at college, once their GPA and SAT or ACT scores are considered. Studies from several years ago highlighted the value of the subject tests in this regard, but that value has declined with the addition of the writing test to the main SAT and ACT exams.
However, under the new UC examination requirements, students will have the choice to submit their subject tests scores as part of their credentials to be considered during the campus-level admission process. Also, subject tests also might be highly recommended for some majors.
Under the new requirements, ~ 21.7 percent of California high school graduates would be eligibled to a review of their college applications compared with 13.4 percent in 2007.
